Well lets get started on this discussion allready!
Last time we talked about the different kinds of systems in term of flood and drain principles. There are basicly two ways to do it where one is or at least can be super simple and the other one is Said to be better but requires building, testning and probably adjustments in the pumps flow. We areprobably all in favor for the simplest working method but i think you should understand the differenses. Ive used the simple way with sucsess and very few problems and Alexander has done it the avanced way. I would like to hear more about that from him!
My way is just Holes at the bortom and at the top of the side of the growbed. The other way is to bild a thing like this https://youtu.be/ZHaiVhVZ3kM,

The bellsyphon is what I have built and the third time I got this right kind of...Atleast after some testing, the syphon it self worked fine, it is the tweeking of the flow from the pump to the bed where the trick lies. One needs to get the flow right and make sure the dimentions of the syphon is correct.

It was very problematic in the beginning constructing the siphon, but I think I know all what is needed to create a good flow in the siphon to get a proper ebb and flow system working, for instance something that one can ad to make it easier is to ad a funnel on the top of the return pipe of the siphon to make it easier to get the vacuum to build up. (I have not tried this yet but seen many with siphons that work perfectly with this "hack")

Here is a very good explanation from a university in Hawaii on how to construct a bell siphon in detail. http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/oc/freepubs/pdf/BIO-10.pdf

We now have almost all the components we need to get it started - the tank, the growbed, the pump and the fish. What we need to get, and hopefully can do today is a bench for the aquarium to get it up a little bit form the floor. We will also need to construct a simple frame to support the growbed ontop of the aquarium. We should also get some pvc pipes to create a standpipe in the bed. My solution at home has some problems - it doesent drain perfectly and the water runns on the underside of the bed and makes a bit of a mess. With a pipe, probably at the center of the bed, it will be less mess and a bit more portable.
Also I have collected all the small chiclids i had in my system and a medium sized catfish and they are ready for transplantation! These are not goldfish, as we were taking about getting, but they have some other advantages. They are smaller, and doesent get bigger than maximum 11 cm. They do not tolerante the same temperaturespan as goldfish though but they have proven to be very hardy as well and around or above 18-20 c will not be a big problem. They also reproduce regularly as we have seen in alexanders system, althogh theese are a different kind.
Another advantagenin my point of view is that they are really cute and bright yellow, and they are quite intelligent and tend to their fry, and they prefer to eat algea and vegetables.
